Founded in 1894 as a school for the children of Methodist ministers, Kingswood College is today one of the country’s top independent schools, offering a co-educational schooling for day scholars and boarders from Grade000 in Preprimary to Grade 12 and a Bridging Year (Post matric).
The Lebone Centre was originally started to provide a platform through which pupils and staff of Kingswood could engage with the local community, where their activities could be sustainable and impactful. The Kingswood College campus abuts an area of Grahamstown where there is much unemployment and poverty, and the Lebone initiative grew out of a desire to help, share and learn. Through community engagement programmes, Kingswoodians learn the values, discipline and reward of leadership and engagement with others. Pupils become aware of issues of social justice, and realise that they can make a positive difference through respectful community engagement both within and beyond the school walls.
Having started out as an initiative of Kingswood College, to provide a platform for their staff and pupils to engage with the local community, the Lebone Centre is now a fully fleged non-profit organization and registered public benefit organization. However, we still enjoy a unique and wonderful relationship with Kingswood, with administrative, maintenance, catering, IT and transport support always forthcoming. We are able to use the Kingswood grounds for our sports days, and call on them regularly when we need assistance.
